LinkedIn allows users to send messages to connect and communicate with other members. By default, the message compose box in LinkedIn is quite small and only shows a few lines of text. Many users want to know how they can make this message box bigger so they can type longer, more detailed messages.
The good news is that expanding the LinkedIn messaging window is easy to do. There are a couple of different methods you can use to increase the size of the message compose box and fit more text in your LinkedIn messages.
Method 1: Drag the Bottom-Right Corner
The easiest way to make your LinkedIn message box bigger is to simply drag the bottom-right corner of the compose window down and to the right. Just hover your mouse over the little diagonal line in the bottom-right corner of the message box. When your cursor changes to the resize icon, click and drag down and to the right to expand the text area.
This will allow you to freely adjust the height and width of the message box on LinkedIn to whatever size you want. Dragging the corner out provides more vertical room so you can add additional lines of text. Widening the box gives you more horizontal space to fit longer lines in the message.
When expanded, the LinkedIn messaging window can become quite large, giving you ample room to type out longer, more detailed messages. You can drag the corner as far down and as wide as you want to suit the length of the message you are composing.
Method 2: Use Full Screen Mode
Another way to maximize the space for composing LinkedIn messages is to put the message box into full screen mode. When you begin writing a new message or reply to an existing thread, look for the small diagonal arrow icon in the top-right corner of the message window.
Click this diagonal arrow icon and it will make the message box take up your entire screen. This provides even more space for typing out longer messages than just dragging the corner. With full screen mode, you can essentially use your entire monitor to compose a detailed message.
When you are finished typing your message in the full screen view, simply click the ‘X’ in the top right corner to go back to the normal messaging window.
Method 3: Copy Text from a File
If you have a longer message already typed up and saved as a text file, you can copy and paste it directly into the LinkedIn messaging window. The message box may still look small, but it will allow you to paste in large blocks of text well beyond what could normally be typed in the box.
Simply open the text file containing your message and select and copy the entire text. Then paste it into the LinkedIn message compose box. The text from your file will now appear in the message, even though the message window itself remains a fixed size.
This lets you circumvent the visual size limitation of the message box by pasting in text from an external document. You are essentially using the LinkedIn message as a container to deliver pre-written content.
Method 4: Send a LinkedIn Message Attachment
If your message to send on LinkedIn is too long to easily copy and paste into the message window, another option is to send it as an attachment.
You can type up whatever message you want in a text document, Word file, PDF, or any other common file format. Save the file containing your full message on your computer. Then when composing your LinkedIn message, use the attachment icon to select your file and add it to the message.
This allows you to attach very long-form messages as a file rather than pasting the content directly in the message box. The recipient will then be able to open the attached document and read your full message.
Method 5: Break Up Into Multiple Messages
For extremely long messages, another workaround is to break your full message up into multiple shorter messages, and send each one individually.
Take your full message and divide it up into sections by topic or key points. Take each section and paste it into separate message compose boxes, then send each message consecutively.
While not seamless, this allows you to get around character limits and send very long messages by separating them into logical chunks. Just make it clear in your message sequence that you are sending multiple parts to one overall message.
Tips for Sending Long LinkedIn Messages
Here are some additional tips for composing and sending long LinkedIn messages:
- Summarize your key points or purpose at the very start of your message before getting into details.
- Use clear paragraph breaks and bullet points to make long blocks of text more scannable.
- Mention at the beginning if your message is broken up into multiple parts.
- Be clear and concise. Don’t make messages longer than they need to be.
- Follow up a long message with a call or meeting to further discuss.
While LinkedIn does limit the size of the message compose box, it is easy to work around by expanding, pasting text, attaching files or splitting up long messages. With a few simple tricks, you can send much longer and more detailed messages to your LinkedIn connections.
