On LinkedIn, you can open message options by clicking on the “…” icon next to a message thread or conversation. This will bring up a dropdown menu with various options for managing that message thread.
Finding the Message Options
To access the message options on LinkedIn, you first need to navigate to your messages page. This can be done in a few ways:
- Click on the envelope icon in the top navigation bar and select “Messages” from the dropdown menu.
- Go to the LinkedIn homepage and click on “My Network” in the top menu. Then select “Messages” from the dropdown.
- If you’re already in a message thread, look for the back arrow in the top left corner. Click it to return to your messages overview.
Once you’re on the main messages page, you’ll see a list of your recent conversations and message threads. To open the options for a specific thread:
- Locate the conversation you want to manage.
- Click on the “…” icon on the right side of that conversation.
This will open up a dropdown menu with available options for that message thread.
Message Options Overview
When you open the message options dropdown, you’ll see the following choices:
- Mark as Unread – Mark the thread as unread, adding a blue dot indicator.
- Move to Archive – Remove the thread from your inbox and move it to your archive.
- Mute Thread – Stop receiving notifications for new messages in that thread.
- Delete Thread – Permanently delete the entire conversation thread.
- Block [Name] – Block the other participant so you no longer receive messages from them.
- Report Conversation – Report inappropriate content in the messages to LinkedIn.
The options shown will depend on the type of conversation and your connection status with the other participant. For example, the “Block” option will only appear if messaging with an individual user.
Marking a Thread as Unread
Marking a conversation as unread is useful if you want to come back to it later. Here’s how to do it:
- Open the message options dropdown.
- Select “Mark as Unread.”
This will make the thread appear bold and add a blue dot indicator on the right. The blue dot signifies the thread has unread messages. When you open the thread again, the bold text and blue dot will disappear.
Archiving Conversations
Archiving allows you to remove conversations from your inbox without deleting them. Archived messages are moved to a separate Archived folder.
To archive a conversation thread:
- Open the message options menu.
- Choose “Move to Archive.”
The thread will disappear from your inbox. To view archived messages:
- Go to your LinkedIn Messages page.
- Select the “Archived” tab at the top.
You can also unarchive threads to move them back to your inbox.
Muting Message Threads
Muting a conversation will stop notifications for that thread, while still keeping it in your inbox. Use this for conversations you don’t need notifications for but don’t want to archive.
To mute a thread:
- Open the message options menu.
- Select “Mute thread.”
The thread will remain in your inbox but you won’t receive any sound or notification when new messages come in.
To unmute a muted thread, follow the same steps and choose “Unmute thread.”
Deleting Message Threads
Deleting a thread permanently erases the conversation from your inbox and archives. Use this option to remove threads you no longer need.
To delete a conversation:
- Open the message options menu.
- Choose “Delete thread.”
- Confirm you want to delete the thread when prompted.
The thread will be immediately deleted from your messages and archived conversations. This action can’t be undone.
Blocking LinkedIn Members
If you no longer wish to receive messages from a particular LinkedIn member, you can block them. To block someone:
- Open the message options for your conversation with them.
- Select “Block” followed by their name.
- Confirm you want to block the member.
Once blocked, all messages from that person will be automatically deleted. They will be unable to send you further messages or view your profile.
Reporting Conversations
You can report conversations that violate LinkedIn’s policies or professional community guidelines. Reporting alerts LinkedIn to inappropriate content.
To report a thread:
- Open the message options menu.
- Choose “Report conversation.”
- Select the reason you are reporting the thread.
- Add any additional details (optional).
- Confirm you want to report the conversation.
LinkedIn will review your report and take appropriate action according to their guidelines. Abuse reports are confidential.
Additional Tips
Here are some additional tips for managing your LinkedIn messages:
- Use search to quickly find conversations – enter keywords in the search bar.
- Sort conversations by newest, oldest, or alphabetically.
- Star important threads to pin them to the top of your inbox.
- Adjust notifications in Settings to control how you’re alerted to new messages.

With the message options menu, you have complete control over managing your LinkedIn conversations. Keep your inbox organized by archiving, muting, deleting, and reporting as needed.
